The Magic of Christmas

Mmm.... Sugar + Cookies = Sugar cookies

You'd think there would be a better name for these...

The cookies above were loving made my my dear Auntie Loda of Rochester, MN.  She is the master at making perfect cookies.  For reals.  Seriously.  The End to all other sugar cookies as you know it.

Below is yet another batch of awesome cookies that I like to nibble.  My favorite thing is to take a bite of one, put it back on the plate, and come back to it awhile later.  This drives my Mother nutso.  Sorry Mom.  Someday I will grow up, promise.

A Die Hard Twilight Fan: My Brother-In-Law

The above picture is dedicated to Dan.

Marla:  ...playing Bella's lullaby on the piano, minding her own business...

Dan:  "Thanks Marla for playing that song and for bringing to mind those Twilight moments."

Marla:  "Ahhhhh!!!!!" ...doubled over, laughing hysterically.

Definitely did not see that coming.

Dan, you ARE... the man.

A Little Oregon at Twilight

Oh Portland!  You are gorgeous and I love you.  Darling Kirstin took me on a little tour of the beautiful state of Oregon.  We stopped at the View Point Inn which for you non-vampire/werewolf fans is where the prom scene was filmed in the Twilight movie.  It was a beautiful but windy day.  We went up to Multnomah falls (which I can't pronounce to save my life so I now call it Malt-o-meal falls) and we drove up to the Gorge where we nearly got blown right off the pavement.  We visited the VooDoo donut shoppe that was filled with a bunch of hipsters and donuts with questionable names.  We went to my new favorite bookstore called Powell's.  Kirstin introduced me to happy hour at the Portland City Grill where we dined on the fanciest of appetizers and Diet Coke Lime.  Heaven.  For dessert we traveled to Cacao for drinking chocolate.  I can say I died and went to Heaven without any reservation.  What a fun trip!  In the middle, there is a picture of the Portland temple.  Incredible spot for such a sacred place.  It was tucked in the middle of a forrest.
Dear sweet Len & Victoria were married there, for all time and eternity
What a perfect trip.  I couldn't have asked for anything more.

My Favorite Christmas Movie

This has always been a favorite of mine.  I'm fascinated with the way that Jimmy Stewart played Mr. Krueger and how it reflected the kind of man that he was.  I believe he was good and kind and that he tried to be like Jesus.  My mom told me the story about how they filmed the above scene and it made such an impact on me.  You can read about it here

The last line of the movie always gets me:  "'I love you.' That's what Christmas is all about... Clarissa said it to Mr. Krueger; Mr. Krueger said it to Jesus; and Jesus in so many ways said it to all of us."

To request your free DVD of Mr. Krueger's Christmas in its entirety and to find out more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, please click here

May you have a very Merry Christmas with an abundance of the Christmas spirit.

PS Don't forget to enter your name in the giveaway for the fancy schmancy rolling pin.

Giveaway, Giveaway

Everybody likes free stuff right?  Well most everybody.  My dad always tells me "nothing in life is free" and he's usually correct.

But today, my fine friends, you have the opportunity to win a giveaway that goes right along with the 'best time of the year':  Christmas!

When I think of Christmas, I think of Jesus.  Jesus first, and then Christmas cookies.  I know, I know,  I'm super deep.  Lately I've been thinking a whole lot about sugar cookies.  The really good kind.  You know what I'm talking about.  The kind that just melt in your mouth and before you even swallow your hand is grasping for another.  Of course, these are tiny cookies so eating 34 of them is no big deal.  Ok, ok.  I might be exaggerating (or not).

Anyone who makes sugar cookies knows you have to have a killer rolling pin.  And that's exactly what one lucky person will win if they leave a comment by Monday, December 14.

PS The company that is hosting this giveaway, CSNstores, has many other cool items that you should definitely check out. They have everything from counter stools, to online toys, to Christmas decorations -- everything you could possible need for making this Season fun!

Why I Changed My Mind

On a recent shopping trip, these "Hulk Hands" caught my eye.  I tried them on.  The wheels started to spin in my head as I threw a couple of punches into the air. I pictured Jake with his twinkley blue eyes and impish smile, opening these up on Christmas morning.  I imagined him running around the living room,
punching the furniture and the floor and ....

And then I thought a little more.

Yeah, maybe it wasn't my best idea yet.
This picture comes from Amazon.com and it helped me
immensely with my decision not to purchase them.

PS Jake, don't worry.
When you are 35, I will buy you these.
By that time, your Mom will be too old to chase me down.

If My Mom Had a Blog...

I am pleased to introduce to you my very first Guest Blogger... the talented and lovely and wonderful Sandy Kucera.  Read on my friends, read on.

I wish I had the “real” picture, but this is the story:

Jana and James and Grandma K took Jacob and Chloe and Anna to the Mall of America on Black Friday (aptly named). One of the rides was Swiper’s Cars (from Dora the Explorer) and the kids had to be 42 inches to go by themselves. So Jacob and Anna go hand in hand over to their car of choice. The guy running the ride very kindly told Chloe she was too short and had her walk back to me. When James realized that she was not going to be able to ride without an adult (we’re talking Junior rides here folks), he came around the corner, scooped her up, put her in a car, then lowed his 6’6” frame into the seat next to her. She just beamed. I’m sure James’ knees got thrown - hard - against the front of the seat every time they flew around the corner, but he just smiled.

Love doesn’t get more compassionate than that.

PS James, Marla here....
which Dora ride are you gonna take ME on?
I want cotton candy too!

Pure Genius.

This other one had me cracking up even more... not sure why.  It's not as popular as the other one, but Oh Danny Boy! I will never think of you the same.
